It's based on an old Mazda van/pick up engine. Decent old school Diesel slugger that'll run for ages if it's looked after.
There does seem to be some notion about it being a Mercedes unit that appears on the internet and in 'for sale' adverts but it's not. For one thing the Kia unit is a 4 cylinder, the old Merc 300D was a 5.
